One of the sessions I attended in VSTE 2013 was iPad Backpack with Chris O’Neill. I really didn’t want to attend another app sharing session because I always leave those sessions feeling overwhelmed with the 30+ apps I should download. With that in mind, here are my top 3 key takeaways from this session:
- Building a mobile backpack means syncing across ALL of your devices.
- This seems like common sense but it’s so easy to become disorganized when you bookmark something on your tablet, smartphone, or computer without using a tool that syncs across all of your devices. I have spent the past few days re-organizing myself so everything is set to sync across my devices. I already feel better having done this!
- Create a temporary app folder to keep things organized for special trips, events, etc. This will make it easier to access apps and delete them later.
- For example, if you are attending a conference that has a mobile schedule, you could place that in the temporary folder. In that folder you could also include any apps downloaded at the conference or any other relevant apps/website URLs you learned about during your trip. When you return home, you can revisit that temporary folder and delete–organize–reorganize the apps. Having that temporary folder prevents your devices from becoming cluttered with non-relevant apps overtime.
- Though I didn’t want this to be an hour of app sharing, I did walk out with two new apps I wanted to add to my mobile backpack.
- Scrollshow: Instead of jumping from one slide to another, all of your content could be scrolled left or right. It’s a pretty interesting concept. I haven’t tried creating any presentations with this app but I plan to do so in the near future.
- AroundMe: AroundMe allows you to search for the nearest restaurants, banks, gas stations, book an hotel or find a movie schedule nearby.
